Scales of War

The Overrun Monastery

The adventures set forth from Brindol heading along Dwarfroad to reach the city of Overlook. Most of their journey is uneventful. Coming to the edge of The Westdeep, a large forest dominated by elves, they were attacked by a group of orcs. The four orcs were no match for these seasoned warriors and quickly without mercy were dispatched. While going over the remains another party of travelers came upon the heroes. They called themselves The Freeriders. The two groups decided to continue the rest of the trip to Overlook together. On the way they spoke of great oddities in the nature of the cosmos. Not to mention Rachel decided on a name for their adventuring party, Jethawks.

Once arriving in the city, the two parties part ways, and the Jethawks decide to seek out some food from a local establishment. They find a dinner that caters to Aulrok’s favorite food, sandviches. The food was to everyone’s liking, and after, eating the group hit the streets again. Not very far from the dinner, they spot a group of ruffians killing a few humanoids. Being the do gooders they are they attempt to stop the ruffians. Little did they that the ruffians were after them too! It was a grueling fight, but in the end the heroes prevailed, to learn of the plot to kill them and their new found friends.

After a brief interaction with some law enforcement in the area they are lead into High Hall, the heart of Overlook. There they met up with their friends again, as they waited for a meeting with the Elders of Overlook to begin. Rachel informed The Freeriders of the impending danger, and Ghena seemed to shrug off the danger as nothing to worry about. Megan, however, thanked Rachel for the information saying that they would keep an eye out for any attempt on their lives.

The meeting convened, and the reason for the call to arms was officially given. A large orc army of never before seen proportions were marching on the gates of Bordrin’s Watch. There was one mission that has not yet been taken, a mission to report the impending danger to a monastery of priests located some distance from the city. Aulrok, volunteered without hesitation, and the others followed suit.

Upon reaching the monastery, The Monastery of the Sundered Chain, the party found the monastery to be overrun by orcs! Battling through the hordes they managed to make it through the courtyard and into monastery itself. Inside they found more orcs and the bodies of dead dwarves strewn about the floor. Another battle ensued, leaving the party once again victorious.

An observant Cael noticed that altar to Moradin, hid a staircase leading to a lower level of the monastery. What awaits the heroes as they descend down into the depths of the monastery?

Ending of Chapter 1

The adventurers defeated the ettercaps with some difficulty. Aulrok, nearly was defeated. Afterwards the party discovered the remains of human. Cael and Adronsius, identified the body as that of the guard captain, Kartenix. They continued their search throughout the catacombs having some quick and decisive battles, and those that pushed them to the brinks of death. One such fight occurred whilst the adventurers were looking for the treasures that were stolen after they had found all the townsfolk.

A carnage demon was released upon the party. The adventurers lead it into the small corridor connecting that room and a room where they had slain powerful undead agents. The battle was difficult but they managed to take down the demon. However, while dealing with the wererats that followed the demon, the demon rose to battle the heroes again. Again, members of the adventuring party nearly died before the beast and wererats were killed.

The journey came to a close in a triangular room, against a lone hobgoblin donning spike plate armor and weilding a chain. Xuxli recognized the hobgoblin from a vision he was shown by Melora. The fight was a rough one with the adventurers finding it difficult to hit Sinruth. Sinruth managed to nearly take down Aulrok at one point and did take down Rachel, the only member of the group to be able to consistently hit him. If not for Aulrok reviving Rachel after she went down the party may have failed to achieve an outcome in their favor.

With the death of Sinruth, the heroes found the remaining missing treasures and a letter on his body.

Brave Sinruth,

The Red Hand will rise again! The other remnants take great cheer in your recent attacks on commerce coming into The Blight That is Brindol.

We’re particularly pleased with your ability to inspire a fighting spirit in others, whether they have true goblin blood or merely wish they did. To be blunt, we think you should have many more soldiers under your command. Many, many more.

And recent events have rendered some remnants leaderless. With a bold stroke on your part, the remnants would rally to the Red Hand you so proudly display.

As your bold stroke, do this: Attack the The Blight That is Brindol by night. Focus your efforts on their Hall of Great Valor, for it mocks the many hard-won victories by the first Red Hand of Doom. Take from them the spoils of war they shamelessly hang on their walls and bring those antiques back to Rivenroar.

Do this before the moon is next full. And with regard to your previous question, turning over captives to your unliving allies at Rivenroar is perfectly acceptable. War sometimes makes strange bedfellows, and we appreciate how you’ve united such disparate forces under your banner. Whatever prisoners you take from Rivenroar you can give to the wight.

Fight with the valor of your ancestors, Sinruth. And keep your hands stained red with the blood of the weak!

I will visit you again next month, at a time of my choosing.

The Emissary

Having read the letter and completed their task the adventurers headed back to Brindol—they had spent days in the underground catacombs. They were welcomed as heroes, but warned of a far greater danger than what they had just faced. “Orcs march on Overlook…” Councilmember Troyas explained.

Your caravan has not been the only one to be attacked. There have been a few rumors of goblinoid attacks on caravans in the area. Rumor has it that these attacks have become more and more coordinated, very unusual for goblins. Your conclusion has it that it must be this Sinruth and Hand business causing most of the trouble. In passing you have also heard a call to arms issued by Overlook in the west.

Talk in the Church

Recently you have over heard some talk among those higher in the Church of Erathis about sending clerics, paladins, invokers, and avengers to Overlook. You didn’t get to listen to much before being discovered, but from what you have gathered Overlook is preparing for another invasion.

Rumors of Taverns

You have traveled much since escaping your father’s grasp. Since your arrival in Brindol, rumors of invasions have circulated through out the taverns and bars. Some claim that an army of an unfathomable size is preparing to rain down on Overlook. Others have said that the dwarves are too cowardly to defend there city and have issued a call to arms so that they can fill ranks, for dwarven soldiers are fleeing. The latter rumor, typically causes a problem when a dwarf over hears it. Piecing the two rumors together you have been able to discern that there is a darkness preparing to befall Overlook and possibly the entire vale.

Menacing Black Blood

The smell of burnt buildings still lingers in the air as you try and sleep. The city of Brindol had been ravaged, but you and other brave souls help push back the invaders. As you sleep, you can feel the whispers of the forest around you, the smell of the sea mixing with that of burnt buildings, and you can feel the blistering sun of the desert. Opening your eyes, you see the beauty of Melora hovering over you. Her hand graces your check and a vision is thurst into your mind. You are shown sturdy stone being painted with black blood and a lone orc standing tall among the bodies of a half dozen other orcs. Your eyes focus back on your god, kissing your forehead she leaves you with another image. The image of a hobgoblin and a ruined castle in the mountains.

Dwarves and orcs...

After spending most of your life in seclusion, you have finally come out into the real world. You don’t have a very good working knowledge of the society and city life yet, but Rachel has been there to guide you. You have heard rumors involving a thing called an orc and another city called Overlook. Overlook seems to be wanting help in whatever form they can get. From what you understand Overlook isn’t primarily populated by humans, but by dwarves.

The Adventure Thus Far

Session 1
p. It was just a quiet evening in the Antler and Thistle in Brindol. Suddenly that evening was interrupted with the door being kicked in and hobgoblins pouring into the tavern. Several patrons died in the initial rush of hobgoblins. The assault was repelled by adventures who just happened to be stopping in for an evening meal and drink.

Session 2
p. After exiting the bar and helping the arriving fire brigade to put out the fire. An ogre hitched to a cart containing two hobgoblins came around a corner on the street to the north. The ogre was chucking explosive barrels at the party. The PCs managed to take down the ogre and its comrades without too much difficulty.
The next day they were summoned to meet Councilmember Troyas. Troyas, requested their help in recovering captured citizens and valuable antiques that were stolen from the Hall of Valor. They accepted the offer of work with no regard for what they could get out of the situation.
After, interrogating a lone hobgoblin that was captured during the raid. The adventures gain knowledge as to where and what was behind the attack the previous night. It was easy for the group to pick up the trail of the retreating army, but lost there way for a short while, before picking the trail back up. Unfortunately, they ran into a hunting party of Kruthik.
They battle was long and difficult bordering on the death of several of the brave adventures. The groups team work finally came together and they were able to survive the fight without any deaths.
Licking their wounds and night falling upon them they decided to make camp.

Season 3
p. The heroes and heroine have reached the Castle of Rivenroar. Not much remained of the castle, but a well traveled path lead to the entrance of the catacombs below the rubble.
Descending into the darkness and unknown they began their mission: rescue the citizens of Brindol and recover the missing artifacts. They managed to clear a small wing of the catacombs discovering Adronsius the alchemist.
The left wing of the catacomb is seeming to be more difficult than the right. Aulrok managed to keep the group from a trap, but chased a gnome into another. Now, they are confronted with Ettercaps at the edge of their lair. Will these brave heroes and heroine be able to survive?
